Reasons for refinishing hardwood floors

Reasons for refinishing hardwood floors

Hardwood is typically refinished for two different reasons. Primarily, homeowners opt to refinish hardwood when it begins to show signs of wear, as this can help to restore its original appearance.

In other cases, some individuals choose to refinish hardwood when renovating a space, as this enables them to change the colour of the stain, thereby transforming the space. In most cases, it is only necessary to remove approximately 1mm of the wear layer to refinish hardwood flooring, making it viable to refinish most solid and engineered hardwood varieties.

How to tell if your hardwood floors can be refinished?

If you are not the original owner of your home, you may not be aware of the condition of your hardwood. Removing a floor grate, door trim or baseboard trim should allow you to examine the profile of the wood to determine whether there is sufficient wear layer, the solid hardwood layer on engineered flooring, remaining.

The wear layer on engineered flooring is 1-8mm, depending on the quality of the flooring. An experienced flooring sanding specialist will carefully remove approximately .75-1mm of the wear layer when refinishing your floors, which means that engineered hardwood with a thick wear layer can be refinished as many as 8-10 times while planks with a thinner wear layer can only be refinished once or twice if at all.

Deep scratches or stains in the wood may require that more of the wear layer is removed, which can impact the number of times the floor can be refinished. Similarly, additional material may need to be removed from floor planks which are cupped as a result of moisture damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

When it comes to selecting a hardwood floor finish that stands up against smudges, footprints, and the constant hustle of paws, oil and wax-based matte finishes are among the best choices. These finishes not only conceal dust, dirt, and minor scratches but also offer a practical solution for households with dogs.

Oil and Wax-Based Matte Finishes

Benefits:

  • Concealing Abilities: Oil and wax-based matte finishes possess a unique ability to conceal imperfections, making them ideal for masking daily wear and tear caused by foot traffic and pet activity.

  • Subtle Elegance: The matte finish provides a subtle and sophisticated appearance while minimizing the visibility of smudges and paw prints. This understated elegance contributes to a cleaner and more polished look.

  • Scratch Resistance: These finishes are known for their ability to absorb into the wood, enhancing its durability and resistance to scratches. This is particularly advantageous in homes with pets, where the floors are prone to minor scuffs.

  • Low Maintenance: Oil-based finishes penetrate the wood rather than forming a thick surface film, making them easier to maintain. They resist water spots and are less likely to show smudges, providing a floor that looks consistently clean.

Why They're Pet-Friendly:

  • Footprint Concealment: Matte finishes effectively camouflage footprints, paw prints, and other minor marks, reducing the visual impact of daily activities on the floor.

  • Durability Against Pet Activity: The penetrating nature of oil-based finishes ensures that they offer durability against the wear and tear caused by pets' claws, paws, and general movement.

  • Easy Clean-Up: Cleaning becomes a breeze with these finishes. Routine maintenance involves simple sweeping and occasional damp mopping, making it convenient for pet owners to keep their floors in top condition.

Practical Considerations for Pet Owners:

  • Matte Finishes: Opt for matte finishes instead of high-gloss options. The low sheen not only conceals imperfections but also reflects less light, minimizing the appearance of smudges and dust.

  • Regular Cleaning Routine: Establish a regular cleaning routine to maintain the beauty of the floors. Light sweeping and periodic damp mopping will suffice to keep the hardwood looking pristine.

  • Protective Measures: Place rugs or mats in high-traffic areas to reduce the impact of foot traffic and pet activity. This extra layer of protection can go a long way in preserving the finish.
