How much does bathroom flooring cost?

Thinking about renovating the floors in your bathroom? Then you may be wondering about costs.

Giving a general cost estimate is rather difficult, as it can vary widely depending on several factors, including the type of flooring material, the size of the bathroom, the complexity of the installation, and the location.

However, here are some general guidelines to help you consider.

Material Costs

The brunt of the cost is going to be in the materials you select. Regardless of which material you choose, the cost of the actual product that you purchase will vary greatly too. For example, thicker floors are generally going to be more durable, and therefore more expensive. Wide plank hardwood floors are also going to be a bit more expensive than their regular width counterparts.

Nevertheless, here are some general price ranges for materials commonly preferred to be used in bathrooms:

  1. Ceramic or porcelain tile: $2 to $20 per square foot
  2. Natural stone tile (such as marble, granite, or slate): $5 to $30 per square foot
  3. Vinyl sheet flooring: $1 to $5 per square foot
  4. Luxury vinyl plank or tile: $2 to $7 per square foot
  5. Laminate flooring: $1 to $5 per square foot
  6. Engineered hardwood flooring: $3 to $10 per square foot
  7. Solid hardwood flooring: $5 to $15 per square foot

If you’re not sure about which flooring material to choose, see our bathroom flooring guide for our tips and recommendations.

Installation

In addition to the cost of the flooring material, there may be additional costs for installation, underlayment, adhesive, and other materials, as well as labor costs if you hire a professional installer.

If you get your floors professionally installed, the type of flooring installation method used will also affect the price. For example, using the glue down method or nail down method for installing hardwood will be significantly more expensive than installing a floating floor for luxury vinyl or laminate.

Costs to install floors in bathrooms is generally slightly higher than other rooms

The cost of installing flooring in a bathroom may be slightly higher than in other rooms due to the specific requirements and challenges of bathroom installations.

Some of these include:

  1. Moisture resistance: Bathroom floors need to be able to withstand exposure to moisture and humidity. This may require additional materials, such as a moisture barrier, a waterproof underlayment, or specialized adhesives, which can add to the cost of installation.
  2. Subfloor preparation: If the subfloor in the bathroom is damaged or uneven, it may need to be repaired or replaced before the new flooring can be installed. This can increase the cost of installation.
  3. Size and shape of the bathroom: Bathrooms come in many different sizes and shapes, which can impact the amount of flooring material needed and the complexity of the installation. Larger or irregularly shaped bathrooms may require more time and effort to install, which can increase the cost of installation.
