History of the Walnut Tree
The scientific name for the walnut tree is Juglans Major. The known history of the walnut tree dates back thousands of years to 7000 BC. They are the oldest known tree, in fact. Walnut trees have been traced back to ancient Switzerland, Italy, France, Belgium, and other Western European areas. In many countries, walnuts from the trees were reserved strictly for royalty.
There are 21 species of the tree including English walnut and black walnut that are the most common. Trees can live 150 to 400 years. They are appreciated for their nuts as well as their wood. Beloved for its beauty and hardness, the wood makes an excellent source of material for building, furniture, and wood flooring.
